The rules are simple: I put the self-timer on 2 seconds, push the button and try to get as far from the camera as I can.
Дарэчы, гэта шчэ ня ўсё. Карыснай будзе інтэрвію зь ім (тут вельмі простая ангельская мова, таму вукладаю арыгіналам):
Running from Camera
Posted: December 05, 2007, 3:40 PM by Mark MedleyGert Rietveld takes photographs of himself running away from the camera. He sets the timer to two seconds then darts away from the lens as fast as he can. Though based in Rotterdam, the 47-year-old artist and part-time web designer has set up his tripod and run in various locales around The Netherlands. Sometimes he only makes it a few steps, sometimes he manages to get quite a bit further. You never see his face, only his back. This photographic exercise, which is oddly captivating, is chronicled on his blog, Running from Camera. He's been exchanging emails with The Ampersand's Mark Medley for about the past month.
So, when did you start running away from your camera?
May 2006. I had bought this small digital camera that fits in my pocket, and I was trying out what I could do with it. I was thinking about how the self-timer could be used to time things. I took two running from camera pictures, one in the garden and one indoors. I thought it would be nice to do a small series, in different locations. Then it sort of grew.
How many photos do you think you've taken?
I have posted 71 photos so far . I have taken a few more, because in the begining I would do a few runs and choose the best ones, mostly to ensure variation. But now variation seems to take care of itself, and I pretty much use every photo I take.
Why do you keep doing it? Is it just good exercise?
I don't know, I still enjoy the pictures
Tell me about some of the strangest places you've shot?
I don't go to places to make pictures there, I take them where I find myself, for me that is part of the point... So I would not say any of the places I have used are "strange" to me. My favourite one so far is this and that is about as normal and unspectacular a place as I can imagine. Neeltje Jans is a pretty spectacular place I guess, and it made for a nice picture. Taking this one in my place of work was pretty funny, I had not warned my colleagues and at that point they did not know about my "hobby."
How do people usually react when they see you running from the camera?
Usually they don't. It doesn't take long to take a picture, and it is over before anybody notices. The only time I really moticed people looking was when I was with a guy with a big video camera who was filming me for local TV.
Local TV? So are you starting to get a lot of attention for your photographs?
Normally I have about 100 visitors a day, but sometimes the blog gets metioned in a popular place, and then I have a peak, and often it then snowballs for a while until it quietens down again.
Why do you think people find your photographs interesting?
Good question, and I don't really know. Some people comment on the "mystery", because my face is never in the pictures. I myself like the variation that executing the same simple plan in different locations brings.
So tell me how you set up each shot?
If I see a place where I want to take a picture, I look for a place where I can put my camera (usually I don't carry a tripod.) This can be a low wall, a garbage can, the back of a bike, etc. Occasionally I am with someone else and I ask them to hold the camera, but I always push the button myself. The distance I make will give you a clue to how stable the place I found for the camera is: the less careful I have to be in pushing the button the farther I get.
Where would be your dream location to run from the camera?
That is hard to answer, because I don't go to "special places" to do them; I want to find the "specialness" in the places where I am. So maybe the best answer would be, the next place I find.
